About Velo Gioielli

“What is cycling themed jewelry?”

I’ve heard it now a thousand times! I’m always happy to explain. My mother and I make jewelry that is traditional, yet has a unique twist using used bicycle chain and bicycle spokes. Currently many of our pieces are one off pieces and we are building a line of jewelry that can be worn not only by cycling enthusiasts but anyone that loves fine jewelry.

Discovering the media:

After riding RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) in 2009 I saw a simple bracelet made from a twisted spoke. I began making the bracelets for my cycling group NW Butts On Bikes. I then wanted to put a colorful bead or letters on the bracelet. After that it was a waterfall of limitless ideas! I wanted to make earrings, then going to my mother a jewelry designer and nurse I asked her how this could be done. We together discovered bicycle chain is the perfect beading media being durable, unique and sometimes down right elegant. The bike spokes we use are made from stainless steel and mostly made here in the US by DT Swiss. I found cleaning the chain, breaking it into little pieces and clear coating it will give it lasting resilience. The spokes when polished create an amazing mirror finish that lasts and lasts.

Rediscovering Portland Saturday Market:

Being Portlanders for decades we wondered how we would fair at Portland Saturday Market. In February of 2010 we applied for Portland Saturday Market. Our work was accepted and we started our booth in March. PSM is now an anchor of the business and a truly amazing place. It’s been a rediscovery of PSM being a world of artists, business people and culture along with new respect for the Market seeing it from the inside out. PSM is a truly amazing place with truly amazing people. Since then we’ve been in a bike fashion show, we sold at first and last Thursdays consistently and have an Etsy store where we also have an array of products and pieces.

On to the future:

What’s in store for Velo Gioielli? We hope to grow the business with wholesale accounts and create a new brand of jewelry. Ideas are plentiful but business can be hard especially making jewelry. We are determined to see it through and become something a little more than just bike jewelry.
